GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are the workhorses, both architectural, both 30-year material warranty, both available in regional color palettes that suit SD homes. Should I pay extra for impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles?
Depends on your insurance. Some California carriers offer 5–15% premium discounts for Class 4 shingles. Math: if the shingle upcharge is $800 and the discount is $150/year, payback is 5 years on a 25-year roof. Usually worth it; we run the numbers during the estimate.
