How shed and gable roof forms differ

A gable roof has two sloping planes. Those planes meet along a ridge. The roof drains toward eaves on opposite sides. Its end walls follow the triangular shape beneath the roof.

That difference affects more than appearance. It changes where the highest interior area sits. It also changes which exterior edges receive runoff. The location of the ridge, eaves, penetrations, and wall intersections must appear clearly on the drawings.

Neither shape selects the roofing material by itself. Asphalt shingles, tile, metal, and membrane products fall within California’s C-39 roofing classification. The project designer and licensed roofer still need to match the complete roofing system to the planned slope and details.

A shed roof can suit a simple rectangular ADU. However, one roof plane isn’t automatically the simpler proposal. Choose the roof form from the drawn ADU footprint, not a reference photo. Mark the exterior walls, doors, windows, utility areas, and connection points. Then place the roof’s high and low lines over that plan.

A simple rectangle can accept either form. With a shed roof, decide which wall becomes the high side. That choice affects the exterior profile and the position of the low drainage edge. With a gable roof, decide how the ridge relates to the long and short sides.

Offsets deserve closer review. An L-shaped footprint, recessed entry, covered patio, or attached storage area can create roof transitions. Drainage should be visible before the roof form is approved. A shed roof directs water toward its low edge. A gable roof divides drainage between two eave sides. The plans should show what lies below each drainage edge, including doors, walkways, patios, and neighboring surfaces.

That review should continue beyond the roof edge. Gutters and downspouts need identified locations when they’re part of the design. Don’t judge usable space from the exterior outline alone. The finished ceiling may follow the roof, remain level, or combine both conditions. The roof assembly also occupies space between the outer covering and interior finish. Structural design, insulation, ventilation, and finish details all influence the final section.

With a shed roof, a taller wall can support a different window arrangement than the low wall. That may work well when the floor plan benefits from height along one side. It can be awkward when cabinets, doors, or other fixed elements compete for the same wall.

With a gable roof, the central ridge can create balanced interior volume. That symmetry may suit a centered living area. It may offer less value when the floor plan places its key room or windows along one edge. The benefit depends on the plan beneath it.

Ask for at least one building section through the important room. That drawing should show the roof form, ceiling, wall heights, openings, and planned equipment. Review it with the floor plan beside it. This catches conflicts that a front elevation can hide.

What the plans and roofing proposal should identify

The construction drawings and roofing proposal should describe the same roof. A rendering can communicate the style, but it can’t define the installation scope. Before approving either document, compare the names, locations, and boundaries of the roofing work.

The plans should identify:

  • The shed or gable roof form and each plane’s slope
  • Ridge, eave, rake, and wall-intersection locations
  • Roof edges intended to receive runoff
  • Planned gutters, downspouts, and discharge locations
  • Roofing material and the specified assembly
  • Decking, underlayment, flashing, and penetration details
  • Skylights, vents, pipes, solar areas, and rooftop equipment
  • Connections between the ADU and any existing structure

The roofing proposal should name the materials and covered work. It should also state who handles decking changes, flashing, gutters, penetrations, and existing-roof transitions.
